A FORMER Maitland pet shop owner was ordered to pay more than $6000 in Maitland Local Court yesterday after he was found to have kept squirrels at his home without a licence.

The man was fined $2000 and told to pay $4000 in costs after officers from the NSW Department of Primary Industries discovered eight caged northern palm squirrels in his backyard in May last year.

Magistrate Stephen Jackson said squirrels were a serious problem in other countries and "treated as rodents".
